When I first started seeing Lisa at Wellness On Shore, it was usually reactive; I’d come in tight, sore, or on the brink of injury, and she’d work her magic to get me moving again. We were, as she says, “fighting fires.” This is what Wellness On Shore does differently to your average gym or training technique.
But this time is different. With the World Triathlon Championships coming up in October, we’re taking a completely new approach. Instead of developing coping strategies for problems, we’re working proactively to build strength and control so my body holds up better across three races in five days.
Lisa and I recently caught up on camera to chat through the plan, and I’m genuinely excited about what we’re doing differently this time around.
Here’s the focus for the coming weeks:
🔹 Core Stability (and not just crunches)
Lisa’s first target is stabilising my core — especially around the diaphragm. I tend to run with too much tension in the lower back, creating a slight “scissor” effect through my gait. By improving intra-abdominal pressure and deep core activation, we’ll hopefully reduce that load and keep my posture stronger, especially deep into a race.
🔹 Thoracic Rotation for Swim Flow
We’re also working on thoracic rotation. My upper back mobility plays a big role in how I move through the water, so loosening up this area helps me swim more efficiently and recover better from each session.
🔹 Lower Abdominal Engagement
Fatigue often leads me to overuse my lower back and lean forward when I run. Strengthening the lower abdominals and improving their activation will help reduce that overcompensation, giving me better form, especially under fatigue.
This is the kind of work that doesn’t always get the spotlight but it makes a massive difference over time. I’m excited to be working with Lisa in a much more proactive way, using her knowledge to fine-tune how my body moves, not just patch things up when they go wrong.
We’ll keep checking in and sharing the progress and hopefully, we’ll all learn a few things along the way.
More to come soon!
